I meant to watch Assassin’s Creed years ago when it first came out, but I completely forgot about it until I was scrolling through Hulu looking for something to watch. I’ve only played one of the games for about an hour on PlayStation, so I’m not very familiar with the lore or how the movie connects to it. Still, I was curious enough to finally give it a try.
I have to say, I wasn’t very impressed. The movie definitely has plenty of action and fight sequences, which helped keep my attention, but the storyline itself felt confusing. During the entire two hours, I never felt like I had a clear sense of who was good, who was bad, or what exactly everyone was trying to accomplish. By the time it ended, with the Assassins standing on top of a building, I honestly felt like I must have missed something. It didn’t feel like a conclusion at all. Is there supposed to be a part two? If so, I really hope it explains a lot more.
I’d love to confidently explain what the movie is about, but all I can really do is describe what I managed to piece together. It opens in the 1400s, where a group of Assassins must protect an artifact called “the Apple” from falling into the wrong hands. This ‘Apple of Eden’ apparently holds the key to humanity’s free will, and the Templar Order wants it so they can control mankind.
Jump to present day, where Cal Lynch (Michael Fassbender) is sentenced to death, only to wake up in a research facility in Madrid run by modern-day Templars. They’ve built a machine that lets Cal experience the memories of his ancestors, and they want him to locate the Apple so they can “eliminate violence” by controlling humanity’s free will.
Somewhere along the way, Cal decides not to help them. Instead, he teams up with the other captive Assassins to protect the artifact, some though who are reluctant to trust him. They retrieve the Apple and vow to guard it again, though the whole sequence felt rushed and messy.
I wish I could explain it more clearly, but that’s genuinely all I got from the story. The movie felt like one giant puzzle with half the pieces missing. With more character development and better explanations, I think I could’ve enjoyed it more.
I’m keeping this review pretty simple because I honestly don’t know what else to say. The movie had enough going on to keep me somewhat entertained, but I struggled the entire time to understand the plot. I don’t think I’d ever rewatch it, especially since the first viewing was already hard to follow. Maybe if I had played more of the games, things would have made more sense.
If you’re familiar with the Assassin’s Creed games, you might appreciate this film more than I did. If not, you might end up feeling just as unimpressed. It’s one of those movies that could go either way depending on the viewer, but for me, it just didn’t live up to what I hoped it would be. Feel free to share your own thoughts—this is just my opinion.

Overall Verdict: It's not a bad movie but you might have a hard time following the storyline. It felt rushed and unfinished.
