Let me start by saying that Harbinger Down instantly reminded me of John Carpenters The Thing. The vibe is similar, but instead of an Antarctic research station, we are stuck on a crabbing boat and unfortunately the movie never reaches the same level of quality. It is not terrible by any means, but there are definitely things that could have been done better. Overall, it feels like one of those classic sci fi channel B-movies that can sometimes be fun and sometimes a complete mess.

The story follows a group of grad students who board a crabbing vessel to study whales, only to stumble across a lost Soviet space shuttle frozen in the Alaskan waters. Their curiosity ends up unleashing a long dormant creature created by a failed Russian experiment. As you might expect, things go downhill from there.

Now for the negatives. The acting is easily the biggest reason this movie struggles. Stronger performances could have lifted the whole film, but most of the cast feels bland and unconvincing. Even Lance Henriksen, an actor I usually enjoy, seems only mildly invested. Whether the problem is the direction, the low budget, or a lack of enthusiasm, it definitely drags the movie down. The story also feels trimmed too much. With a run time of only an hour and twenty two minutes, it seems like entire plot points were left in the editing room. Certain areas could have used more explanation, and a little extra detail would have improved the movie a lot.

Honestly, the short run time is part of the reason I gave it a try. I wanted a sci fi creature feature but did not want to commit to a long movie, and this seemed like a quick and simple option that I had not seen before.

What actually saves the movie from being a total waste of time are the creature effects. They are not amazing or high budget, but they are fun enough to enjoy. Some moments even remind me of the chestburster scenes from Alien, which helps add some excitement. Although the beginning feels rough, especially because of the acting, the film becomes much more entertaining once the creature finally appears. Thankfully, that happens within the first twenty minutes.

In the end, Harbinger Down kept me entertained despite its flaws. I would still rather watch The Thing again, but this is not a bad option if you want a quick creature feature and do not mind something simple and lower budget. Just keep in mind that it is very much a straight to tv style sci fi channel movie that was never meant to win any awards, but for what it is, it offers a decent enough ride.

Overall Verdict:  It's not a bad sci-fi channel creature feature type film, but it's also not going to win any awards. If you like watching B-movie horror, give this a shot. - At least it won't take up too much of your time.
