I put off watching Together for a while because it was labeled as a Romance/Horror, but I’m glad I finally gave it a chance. I went in mostly blind, having skipped the trailer and only reading the brief description. So if you’re anything like me and tend to avoid romance movies, don’t let that genre tag scare you off. This really isn’t a romance film in the traditional sense. It’s primarily a horror movie. Just because there’s a couple at the center of the story doesn’t automatically make it romantic. If anything, the so-called romantic elements exist only because an evil force is literally pulling them together. I’d personally call this about 90 percent horror.
One of the main reasons I wanted to check this out is because I’m a big fan of Dave Franco and usually enjoy his performances. Together was no exception. Both Franco and Alison Brie exceeded my expectations. I don’t often associate either of them with horror, but they did a great job here. They’re married in real life, which may explain some of their strong on-screen chemistry, but regardless of the reason, it was enjoyable seeing them share the screen.
To summarize the plot in a nutshell, the story is about a couple who move from the city to a more countryside area. While out on a hike, they end up falling into a cave. Since it’s pouring rain, they decide to wait it out and sleep there. When they wake up, they discover their legs are stuck together. After pulling themselves apart and leaving the cave, Tim (Franco) begins experiencing strange sensations, as if he’s somehow connected to Millie (Brie). When he tries to explain what’s happening, Millie brushes it off, especially since there’s already tension in their relationship after the move. Eventually, she starts feeling the same connection, and the two must figure out what’s causing them to slowly merge into a single person.
I won’t go into any further plot details to avoid spoilers, especially since this is still a fairly new movie. I will say that it has some genuinely creepy moments, and the visual effects are very well done. There are one or two jump scares, but the film relies more on an unsettling, supernatural atmosphere. It reminded me at times of movies like The Ring or The Grudge.
That said, there were a few things that didn’t quite make sense and pulled me out of the experience. For starters, when they fall into the cave, they don’t really attempt to escape. I understand it’s raining, but the next morning they climb out pretty easily using what looks like vines or a makeshift ladder. If I were in that situation, I’d at least try to get out instead of immediately giving up and taking a nap. It also felt strange that when they woke up stuck together, there wasn’t more curiosity or urgency about how or why that happened. Calling a doctor, the police, or anyone at all seems like it would have been a logical step. Plus, that massive hole in the ground feels like something that should be reported so no one else falls in.
Another issue I had was that they never seek medical help as the situation escalates. If I noticed my body physically merging with someone else, my first move would be heading straight to the ER or calling 911. While the movie does explore some extreme solutions, the lack of professional medical involvement was hard to overlook.
Those are really my only major complaints. Overall, I enjoyed Together quite a bit and appreciated its concept. It’s not something you see over and over again in the horror genre. While body-horror films about people merging do exist, this one felt different, and in a good way.
If you’re looking for a horror movie that isn’t just another slasher or standard ghost story, this is worth checking out. There’s a lot to like, and it doesn’t feel padded or unnecessarily long. The ending could have been stronger or explained a bit more, but overall it’s a solid watch. And despite what some reviews suggest, this is definitely not a movie for the whole family. If you have younger kids, you’ll want to skip this one as it does contain some nudity and sexual situations that probably aren’t appropriate for them.
Overall Verdict: This is mainly a horror movie so if you're expecting a romance like some websites suggest, you should probably look elsewhere. If you want a horror movie that isn't your typical slasher/ghost story then it's worth checking out.
