I just watched the new Project Hail Mary starring Ryan Gosling and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. I’ve never been a huge Ryan Gosling fan, but I actually liked him a lot in this one. The movie felt like a mix between Interstellar and WALL-E in my opinion. I wouldn’t say it was completely original, but it blended together a lot of familiar ideas in a really enjoyable way.

The film follows a science teacher named Ryland Grace (Gosling), who wakes up alone on a spaceship with no memory of why he’s there. While drifting through space, he encounters an alien lifeform and the two form an unlikely friendship. As Ryland slowly pieces together his memories, they work together to uncover the mysterious substance threatening both of their worlds.

That’s really all you need to know going into the movie. I don’t want to spoil anything, but honestly, even if I did, I don’t think it would ruin the experience. This isn’t some huge mystery or twist-heavy film where knowing the ending changes everything. It’s more about the journey and the characters along the way.

Project Hail Mary is one of those sci-fi movies that doesn’t really feel like a traditional sci-fi movie. The alien lifeform Ryland meets is basically just a rock that moves around like a robot. The film also jumps back and forth between space and flashbacks from Ryland’s past, which helps keep things interesting. So even if you normally aren’t into sci-fi films, there’s still a lot here to enjoy. There’s also a good amount of humor mixed in throughout the movie, although I wouldn’t really call it a comedy.

One of the biggest reasons I enjoyed the film so much was the visual effects. Nothing about it felt cheap or overly CGI-heavy. Everything looked believable enough to pull you into the world. Sure, there were a few moments that felt a little far-fetched, but I didn’t let that bother me. At the end of the day, it’s still a movie, and not everything needs to be perfectly realistic.

The friendship between Ryland and his rocky companion, Rocky, was fantastic. That’s probably the main reason why this movie works as well as it does. The bond between the human and alien characters plays such an important role and really helps the film stand out. By the end of the movie, you genuinely care about both of them and hope they remain friends forever. Does that happen? Well, you’ll just have to watch the movie and find out.

I thought the acting was strong across the board. Like I mentioned earlier, I’m not usually a big Gosling fan, but I think he did a great job with this role. While Gosling is obviously the main focus of the film, the supporting cast also delivered solid performances. I also have to mention James Ortiz, who provided the puppetry and voice for Rocky. He was excellent and played a huge part in making the character feel believable and memorable.

Overall, I would highly recommend this movie. I think it’s perfectly fine for the whole family to watch, and even younger viewers will probably enjoy it. It’s rated PG-13, but that mostly comes from the suspense and tense moments. Don’t expect gore, nudity, or excessive profanity here. It’s definitely a more family-friendly type of film.

If you’re looking for a good Friday night movie to watch with the family, this is definitely one worth checking out. Just keep in mind that it runs a little longer than most movies at around two and a half hours, so you may want to start it a bit earlier in the evening.

Overall Verdict:  This is definitely a film worth checking out even if you're not a big sci-fi fan. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Project Hail Mary wins multiple awards.
