So I watched this movie “The Astronaut” mainly because it had Lawrence Fishburne and Kate Mara in it and I typically enjoy the movies they are in. The premise sounded enjoyable enough along with the trailer so I said, “Sure, I’ll give it shot”. It can’t be that bad right? Well it’s not that bad. At least not like some people say it is.
I was reading some other people’s reviews and this one bozo named rythmshifter says “so f**** bad there are no words to describe how bad this movie is.”

Well that is being extremely overly dramatic as it is nowhere near being that bad. I can promise you that there are a million other movies out there that far worse. If this clown is giving this movie 1/2 a star, then what would and actual bad movie get? -400 stars? And to think that there are at least 4 others that agree with him make it even worse. Come on people, try being a least a little realistic. This is the reason I never go off of what other people say about movies.
This movie actually isn’t that bad at all. It does start out rather slow and doesn’t really get that interesting until about half way through. Once the creepiness sets in though when she’s alone and scared in the house with “something” in there with her, it does start to get better. I’m not going to give any spoilers though.
The whole relationship aspect of it between the mother, husband, and daughter could have been better but that’s just my opinion. I kept thinking to myself, “why is the husband and daughter not staying with their mom when she got back from space?” That didn’t really make any sense unless it was a NASA thing, but when she started getting freaked out, you would think that she would want other people to stay there with her so at least she doesn’t feel AS crazy.
The same goes for the bruising on her arm. If you notice bruising getting worse and worse, and bigger and bigger, why the hell would you not want to share that with the medical team. I mean come on, I know you want to be able to go back in space again, but if you die because of it, then it’s not going to matter anyways.
There was a rather amusing scene towards the end and I swear that they stole it directly from the original Jurassic Park. It’s the scene when the kids are in the kitchen hiding from the Raptors.. yeah, well it seemed like an exact replica with the stainless steel kitchen, the creature sounds and all. And then, as she’s trying to escape, she sees a vent in the bottom of the wall and what did she do? She kicked it open. Now I thought she was going to crawl through… I mean why else would you kick it open. But that’s not what happened. Instead, it’s just the bottom of a door she magically open and just walked through. So kicking out the vent was just a complete waist of time and all it did was make a lot of noise to draw the creature towards you. It was rather amusing though and I got good laugh out of it.
Now there’s a lot of people that will say the ending is bad, but I actually enjoyed the ending. I feel like it was nice twist and little unexpected. Now the CGI could have been a little better along with the dialogue but that doesn’t mean it was bad. I personally probably would have went another way with it, but again I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet.
I think overall the movie was made well, the acting wasn’t horrible and the music was just fine. I wasn’t blown away by it but I also don’t regret watching it. I can understand how some people might not like it but I think it’s one of those you have to watch for yourself and make your own opinion.
If you’re looking for a flick to kill some time that is a little creepy then by all means watch it. Don’t go in with super high expectations though or you might be sadly disappointed. All in all, it’s a watchable movie.

Overall Verdict: Worth watching once but don't have high expectations. I most likely won't be watching this again unless it's on TV late at night and I can't find anything else.
