I just finished watching Good Boy, and I’ll get straight to the point: it’s terrible. I love horror films and genuinely wanted to like this, but instead I found myself counting down the minutes until it ended. Thankfully, it only runs about an hour and twelve minutes, because if it were any longer, I would have shut it off. I honestly can’t understand how this movie currently holds a 6.1 rating on IMDb with over 25,000 votes. At best, I’d give it a 3.9, and that’s being generous. The only reason it even reaches that score is because the directing and cinematography are decent. Beyond that, there’s nothing here.
I’m convinced the rating is as high as it is simply because the main character is a dog. With so many dog lovers out there, it feels like people decided they liked this movie before they even watched it. And don’t get me wrong, I love dogs and have one myself, but that doesn’t excuse the fact that this film feels completely pointless. There’s practically no plot, and so many things are left unexplained that it’s impossible to justify a higher score.
From the very beginning, the movie was already testing my patience. It opens with Todd’s phone constantly ringing as his sister Vera repeatedly calls him. This goes on for what feels like several minutes. Every time the film cuts to another scene, that phone is ringing again. Just answer it already!
One of the stranger creative choices is that we never actually see Todd’s face, or anyone else’s for that matter. There’s a brief, blurry glimpse at the very end, but it’s so unclear that it hardly counts. This isn’t a dealbreaker on its own since the focus is clearly on the dog, Indy, but it still feels like an odd and distracting decision.
Trying to explain the point of this movie is difficult because I honestly don’t think there is one. From what I could gather, Todd and Indy move into the house of a relative — maybe his grandfather or father, I can’t remember exactly because it sucked so bad — and there’s supposedly some kind of evil presence there. Todd is clearly sick, constantly coughing up blood, yet the reason is never explained. Vera keeps checking in on him, but this doesn’t really go anywhere. If anything, it just suggests that something was already wrong with Todd before he ever moved into the house.
Indy starts noticing strange things around the house while Todd repeatedly tells Vera that everything is fine. According to the description, this is supposed to be about a brave dog fighting to protect the ones he loves, but that’s not what comes across on screen at all. What I saw was a scared dog trying to comfort his owner, only to be pushed away half the time. Indy never really feels heroic — he mostly seems confused and afraid.
As for the supernatural element, it’s barely defined. A creepy hand shows up occasionally, Todd randomly bangs his head against the wall, and that’s about as deep as it goes. Nothing is explained. The movie leans heavily on constant rain to create atmosphere, which helps a little, but it’s not enough to carry the film. If the filmmakers had bothered to explain what the supernatural force actually was, this might have been more enjoyable. Instead, you’re left with a pile of unanswered questions.
This is one movie I completely regret watching. I’ll never watch it again, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. Even if you’re a huge dog lover, this movie just isn’t worth your time. It’s boring, confusing, and largely plotless. Most of the runtime is spent watching Todd in the background talking on the phone or doing pointless tasks that add nothing to the story. There’s even a neighbor who sets fox traps for some reason, which also leads absolutely nowhere.
My advice is simple: stay far away from Good Boy. I’d love to explain more about what this movie is about, but honestly, it’s so poorly put together that I can’t. If you do decide to watch it anyway, at least take comfort in the fact that it’s short and won’t waste too much of your time.

Overall Verdict: Don't let the cute dog fool you or the higher rating on IMDB. Good Boy is far from a good movie and the $70K budget might explain why.
