5.5 of 10 stars

So I’m not quite sure what all the hype is about for “Sinners”. I don’t even know where to begin with this movie. I don’t think it is anywhere near the 7.6 rating it is getting on IMDB. At best, I would give it a 5.5 and that’s being nice.

This movie started out extremely slow and nothing happened for at least 40 minutes. I almost got to the point that I was about to turn it off because nothing was happening. It was just a bunch of dialogue that was really completely unnecessary. All I got out of the first hour was that Michael B. Jordan “Smoke” and his twin brother, Michael B. Jordan “Stack”, were opening a bar to start over in a crappy run down old barn. …And somewhere in the middle of all of it is a cousin that plays the blues on the guitar.

Finally after about an hour it got a little more exciting, but nothing that will blow your mind. There was way to much singing and at one point there’s a scene during a song where the costumes really didn’t depict the era that they were going for. It was strange and I thought “what the hell is going on now”. The vampires even broke out in a choreographed song and dance towards the end that was totally useless and didn’t make any sense what-so-ever.

It seemed to me like it was a poor attempt at trying to be like “From Dusk Till Dawn” but never delivered on any scares or anything really horror. Just because there are vampires in the movie doesn’t make it a horror movie. Have you seen “Once Bitten” with Jim Carrey? It’s hardly an action movie either. The only action/horror was pretty much the last 20 minutes of the movie and by that time, I just wanted the movie to end.

I feel like the plot of the movie was just ok. It didn’t seem like anything new but a remake made completely for the African American population. I mean, there was one white woman in there, but she states she is half black so I’m not sure if that counts. Michael B. Jordan did do a rather good job playing both bothers but that doesn’t make up enough for the boredom I endured throughout most of the film. Again, it took way too long to get the ball rolling and left me kinda wishing I turned it off half way through. By the end of the film, my very first thought was “Meh, I thought that was going to be much better.”

Now don’t get me wrong, I won’t say Sinners is bad because when it did finally get going, it kept me entertained enough to want to finish the movie, but I struggled for the first half. I just don’t understand all the hype about it. It’s worth a watch for sure, but make sure you have plenty of popcorn ready for the first 40 minutes cause that’s all you’ll be doing. It could easily have been shortened to 1 hour and 25 minutes which would have made it less painful to watch.

If you’re looking for a good horror/vampire movie to watch, I’d recommend looking elsewhere as this is probably not going to be what you’re expecting.

I’m going to mark this as approved because it is worth a watch, I was just hoping it would be better.

Overall Verdict:  It's worth watching but there are far better vampire movies out there that I would watch again before this.
