After finishing Netflix’s The Rip, I can honestly say I had a great time with it. In a lot of ways, it felt like a spiritual cousin to Triple Frontier, another film starring Ben Affleck. It carries that same high-stakes money-heist energy, just on a smaller, more grounded scale. Instead of crossing international borders, the story stays rooted in Miami, and rather than military special forces, the focus is on a Tactical Narcotics Team (TNT) within the Miami Police Department.

It was great to see Matt Damon and Ben Affleck sharing the screen again. When these two work together, they usually deliver, and The Rip is no exception. The only real exception in their shared history (for me at least), was The Last Duel, which is a film I have no interest in revisiting ever. But that’s a conversation for another day.

The Rip follows a group of Miami cops assigned to the elite TNT unit. After their commanding officer is murdered, Matt Damon’s character steps in as lieutenant and reveals information about a large sum of cash supposedly tied to a Crime-Stoppers tip. As the team investigates the house where the money is hidden, doubt begins to creep in. Is this a legitimate operation, or is something far more calculated going on beneath the surface? As tensions rise, loyalties are tested and motives start to blur.

I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll keep it vague from here. While parts of the story are somewhat predictable, there were moments that made me second-guess my assumptions. For a good stretch of the film, it’s hard to tell who can be trusted and who can’t, and the lines between right and wrong aren’t always clear. If you pay close attention early on, certain pieces of dialogue that initially seem odd end up making perfect sense towards the end of the film.

The cast is solid overall. Damon and Affleck are both convincing in their roles, and Steven Yeun stands out as Detective Mike Ro. His performance adds another layer of tension to the group dynamic. I wasn’t entirely sold on Teyana Taylor as Detective Numa Baptiste, though. She didn’t give a bad performance by any means, but her character felt more like someone out of a Fast & Furious movie than a real-world police officer. Similarly, while I generally enjoy Kyle Chandler, who has played law enforcement roles in the past, I wasn’t completely convinced by him as a DEA agent here. Again, not bad performances, just slightly miscast in my opinion.

That said, the film is well paced and never feels like it drags. At just under two hours, it moves quickly and feels much shorter than its runtime. While the storyline doesn’t break any new ground, it delivers exactly what it sets out to be: a tense, action-driven crime thriller with enough mystery to keep things engaging.

Netflix tends to release some pretty solid films compared to many other studios, and The Rip fits right into that category. If you enjoy crime dramas with twists, moral gray areas, and controlled bursts of action, this one is definitely worth checking out. It offers a good balance of suspense and intensity without going overboard, and that balance is likely why it flies by so quickly. This one gets my approval, and I’d bet most viewers who enjoy this genre will feel the same.

Overall Verdict:  It's a solid Netflix film featuring both Matt Damon & Ben Affleck and it's 100% better than The Last Duel.
