I just finished watching the classic 90’s movie Timebomb, mostly because I love older sci-fi films. There’s something refreshing about movies that don’t rely on modern CGI. Today’s effects can look great when they’re done well, but they often feel too artificial. I prefer the old-school approach. You know, real explosions, real fire, and practical effects that give everything a grounded, tactile feel. Sure, it was riskier for the cast and crew back then, but it added a sense of authenticity you don’t always get today.

I also chose Timebomb because Michael Biehn stars in it. He played Kyle Reese in the original Terminator, which is one of my favorite franchises. I wouldn’t call him an incredible actor, but I enjoyed him in Terminator enough to give this movie a shot.

The story centers around Eddy, a quiet watch repairman who suddenly becomes the target of an assassination attempt for reasons he can’t understand. After surviving the attack, he starts experiencing disturbing visions that feel like fragments of a past he doesn’t remember. Desperate for answers, he turns to Dr. Anna Nolmar, played by Patsy Kensit. The two team up to uncover why Eddy is being hunted, though he spends a good portion of the film unsure whether she’s helping him or setting him up.

Overall, Timebomb turned out to be a semi-decent watch. Some of the special effects are undeniably cheesy, but that’s part of the early 90s charm. The gunfire sounds odd at times, like someone thumping a watermelon, and the fight scenes are wildly exaggerated. There’s also a few moments that are so clumsy they become unintentionally hilarious. One standout example happens near the end during a hotel room fight scene where Eddy repeatedly elbows a bad guy who clearly has a sheet over what is definitely not a human head. It’s ridiculous, but in the best way.

As for the sci-fi aspect, it wasn’t as prominent as I expected. The movie leans much more toward action and thriller territory, with only a light sprinkle of sci-fi elements. The visions Eddy experiences are the main reason it qualifies at all, and they’re explained as the result of brainwashing and implanted memories rather than futuristic technology or world-building.

Despite its flaws, and there are plenty, Timebomb has that fun, cheesy B-movie energy that makes older genre films enjoyable. If you’re a fan of vintage sci-fi or action flicks, it’s worth checking out. And yes, Billy Blanks shows up too. You know, the guy behind the Tae-Bo fitness craze. Let’s just say his performance won’t be earning any awards, but it adds another layer of retro charm to the whole experience.

Overall Verdict:  If you enjoy older sci-fi/action movies from the 90's, it's worth checking out. But if that's not your thing, I would probably skip this one.
